It has been far too many years since OMT have won a highly entertaining and competitive game in the Cricketer Cup. It was a delight to see the younger generation (with a healthy dose of support from some of the older and more experienced heads) lead a strong OMT performance to chase down Old Wykehamists total of 233.
Throughout the match, neither side managed to establish an unassailable position at any time. OMT struggled to take wickets early on and OWs were starting to look threatening at 186-2 after 30 overs. However, following Ravi Patel's introduction into the attack, three quick wickets saw them slump to 187-5 which brought OMT back into the game. The lower middle order saw OW to a competitive, but not dominant total of 233 for 8 at the close of 50 overs.
OMT made steady progress built around a mature and sensible innings from Joe Regan who ended on 102 not out. Ravi made a quick 33 as an opener since he was suffering from a calf strain and unable to run without difficulty. However, none of following batsmen were able to keep Joe company for long enough to secure the innings. At 113-4 the match was very much in the balance and it was only a punishing innings from Aaran Amin who put on 116 with Jo that took OMT to safety. By the time he was out for 61, the match was won.
Let's hope that this is the beginning of a sustained resurgence in our Cricketer Cup fortunes. The next round will be played at School on 30 June against the winners of Old Bedfordians and Old Eastbournians. Both these sides have shown good form in the competition in recent years and whoever we play will no doubt offer a stiff challenge. See you there!
